Starbucks is Launching a New In-Store Digital Network

In an effort to make customers experience more social, Starbucks is launching a new in-store digital network. Starbucks latest effort to fight against the “cookie-cutter feel image” it has is to deploy free Wi-Fi and an in-store digital network offering news and entertainment that offers news and entertainment.  Customers are expected to be able to access the network later this fall.  Some independent coffee shops have began ditching the digital connection saying it creates an isolating environment and encourages more consumption of bandwidth than coffee.  Starbucks is sticking with its digital vision as part of a turnaround effort from the pain it has felt of the recession.  CEO and founder Howard Schultz has taken back control and the results show profits up 37 percent in its latest quarter.  “In some ways one of the most interesting and important aspects of the Starbucks Digital Network is that it actually can be a hyper-local, community-oriented offering,” said Adam Brotman, vice president of digital ventures for Starbucks. Brotman also says, “That Starbucks experience, part of it sometimes is connecting with somebody physically who’s across the table from you, or connecting with our baristas, sometimes it’s connecting with somebody over the Internet.”
