CSL Vaccine Causes Convulsions and Fever

One type of flu vaccine made by CSL Biotherapies, an Australian company, should be avoided by children ages 6 months through 8 years according to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.  CSL is one of five manufactures who supply vaccine to the U.S., but only accounts for a small portion of the 170 million doses.  Earlier this year there was an unexplained higher rate of fevers and seizures seen in young children who got the vaccine.  In children under five, the rates for about 10 times that of other flu vaccines.  No deaths have been linked to the problem.  Investigators in Australia have not found anything in the CSL vaccine to explan the high fevers and convulsions in children.  CSL spokeswoman, Sharon McHale, “We support the precautionary approach” and stated the company agreed with the U.S. committee’s decision.  McHale said the company has decided not to distribute one version of the vaccine intended for the youngest children.
